Albania: Summer 2004

After suffering for decades under an extreme communist regime, Albania is struggling with massive poverty.

A small group of health educators, in July of 2004, traveled to the southern Albania city of Korca to conduct the country's first HER Health Expo. The Expo's banners and screening stations were set up each evening at the town's park.

The response from the public was so overwhelming that the small team could not manage on their own. They were soon joined, however, by three of the Expo’s attendees who volunteered their help and continued to come and assist throughout Expo.

The Expo team spent their free time during the mornings visiting communities around Korca to offer basic screening services, and in one town were invited to hold an Expo on the porch of the Orthodox Church. The Albanian Health Expo experience was very successful, with more than 800 attendees receiving screenings and health information during the two weeks the health educators were in the country.
